Content

Apostille Korea announced that it has launched a service for issuing the Family Relationship Certificate in English. The Supreme Court began issuing the English version on the 27th of last month and, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, uses passport information for the issuance. This means the English name on the certificate matches the passport.

Key points
  • Apostille Korea has launched a service for issuing the Family Relationship Certificate in English.
  • The Supreme Court has been issuing the English certificate since the 27th of last month.
  • Passport information is used through cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, so the English name matches the passport.
  • Issued on an applicant basis, the certificate shows only parents and spouse, without children.

Issued with the same English name as the passport

The Supreme Court began issuing the English Family Relationship Certificate on the 27th of last month. A distinctive feature is that passport information is used for issuance through cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. As a result, the English name on the certificate is identical to the one on the passport. The certificate is used for overseas immigration, employment, travel and entry screening of minors. Until now, submitting it abroad required translating it into English and then having it notarised. Apostille Korea launched its English issuance service in line with the new arrangement.

It differs from the Korean version, so check first

The English certificate differs in several ways from the Korean one, so it is worth checking before applying. When the document is requested on an applicant basis, only the parents and the spouse can be confirmed. Children are not included in that certificate. If a certificate showing children is needed, several documents must be issued, one for each child. It is safer to confirm what composition the receiving institution requires before applying. Apostille Korea handles this procedure through its civil document issuance platform.
