Apostille Korea said it operates a contactless one-stop service for obtaining the documents needed to register for Korea's school-diploma qualification examination online. The examination, covering elementary, middle and high school graduation levels, is administered by metropolitan and provincial education offices, and eligibility and registration dates are posted on each office's website. Because the required papers differ according to a candidate's schooling, checking in advance matters.
- Eligibility and registration schedules for the qualification examination are posted on each provincial education office website.
- Those who left school mid-course submit a record of withdrawal, students managed outside the enrolment quota submit the corresponding certificate, and exempted students submit a certificate of exemption.
- Returnees from abroad must submit original foreign-issued records translated into Korean and notarised.
- Records from countries outside the apostille convention require an original certificate issued by a Korean overseas mission, which takes longer.
Papers that change with prior schooling
The qualification examination covers elementary, middle and high school graduation levels and is administered by metropolitan and provincial education offices. Candidates can check eligibility and registration dates on the website of the education office for their area. Registration papers matter as much as exam preparation, and what is required changes with each candidate's schooling. Someone who withdrew during middle or high school submits a record of withdrawal, while a student under compulsory education managed outside the enrolment quota submits the certificate for that status. Those exempted from compulsory education submit a certificate of exemption, and graduates or expected graduates of three-year civic high schools, technical schools, schools equivalent to middle and high schools, and vocational training institutes prepare the matching certificate.
The legalisation returnees need to check
Candidates who finished their studies abroad must submit the original foreign-issued records to have that schooling recognised. Records written in any foreign language other than English must be translated into Korean and notarised. If the school does not appear on the education ministry's website, an apostille or notarisation at a consulate is required on top of that. For a returnee from a country outside the apostille convention, Article 30 of the Act on Notarial Acts by Overseas Missions requires an original certificate issued by the Korean embassy or consulate in that country. That document too needs translation, notarisation and either an apostille or consular legalisation, so the timeline can stretch. Apostille Korea runs a contactless one-stop service in which candidates choose the documents they need on the website and receive the issued files in PDF form.
Frequently asked questions
Are the registration papers the same for everyone?
No. They differ with prior schooling and may include a record of withdrawal, an out-of-quota management certificate, a certificate of exemption or a graduation certificate.
How are academic records obtained abroad submitted?
Records in a foreign language other than English must be translated into Korean and notarised. If the school is not listed on the education ministry's website, an apostille or consular notarisation is also required.
What about records from countries outside the apostille convention?
Article 30 of the Act on Notarial Acts by Overseas Missions requires an original certificate issued by the Korean embassy or consulate in that country. Translation, notarisation and consular legalisation are needed, so allow extra time.
