Title

Qualification exam applications require different documents by education record School leavers, compulsory education cases, graduates of equivalent schools and returnees from abroad each prepare a different set.

Content

Apostille Korea said the documents required for a qualification examination application differ according to each candidate's education record. Those who left middle or high school submit a certificate of withdrawal, while compulsory education students managed outside the enrolment quota submit an out-of-quota management certificate. Returnees from abroad need extra documents that have passed translation, notarisation and legalisation before their studies can be recognised.

Key points
  • Students who dropped out of middle or high school submit a certificate of withdrawal.
  • Among elementary and middle school compulsory education cases, those managed outside the quota submit an out-of-quota management certificate and exempted students submit an exemption certificate.
  • Graduates, completers and expected graduates of three-year civic high schools, schools equivalent to middle and high schools, and vocational training institutes submit the corresponding certificate.
  • Returnees from abroad must have original foreign documents translated into Korean and notarised before submission.

The document set changes with the education record

Preparing the paperwork for a qualification examination matters as much as studying for the test itself. The reason is that the documents to be submitted change according to the candidate's education record. Someone who withdrew while attending middle or high school submits a certificate of withdrawal. Among elementary and middle school students under compulsory education, those managed outside the enrolment quota submit an out-of-quota management certificate, while exempted students submit an exemption certificate. Graduates, completers and expected graduates of three-year civic high schools, of schools treated as equivalent to middle and high schools, and of vocational training institutes submit a certificate of graduation, expected graduation or completion. It is safer to confirm which case applies before gathering the documents.

The procedure returnees from abroad must check

Returnees from abroad have additional documents to submit before their studies can be recognised, so there is more to prepare. First, the identity of the person the documents are issued to must be verified precisely. Among original documents issued abroad, those in a foreign language other than English must be translated into Korean and notarised before submission. If the school does not appear on the Ministry of Education website, the document must also pass apostille or consular notarisation. For returnees from countries outside the apostille convention, Article 30 of the Act on Notarial Acts Done at Diplomatic Missions applies: where the document was issued by a Korean embassy or consulate in that country, the certified original must be submitted. These documents also require translation, notarisation and apostille or consular legalisation, which can take considerable time, so the schedule should allow for it.

Frequently asked questions

Which document is needed after leaving middle or high school?

A certificate of withdrawal. Because the set of documents depends on the education record, confirm first which case applies.

Can documents issued abroad be submitted as they are?

Documents in a foreign language other than English must be translated into Korean and notarised first. If the school is not listed on the Ministry of Education website, apostille or consular notarisation is also required.

What about returnees from a country outside the apostille convention?

Under Article 30 of the Act on Notarial Acts Done at Diplomatic Missions, where the document was issued by a Korean mission, the certified original must be submitted. Translation, notarisation and consular confirmation are also needed, so allow extra time.
